H.B. Fuller is Making a Difference in Indonesia

Recently, H.B. Fuller employees in Ngoro, Indonesia, launched a Make A Difference day as part of H.B. Fuller’s global employee volunteerism program. Nearly 50 employees – from operators to managers – participated in a full day of excitement. They helped to clean up the Tambak Bahak beach in Probolinggo, East Java. They planted the first grouping of what will be 1,000 mangrove trees to be planted over the coming months. And, they supported a local community project to raise awareness about prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS.

In addition to H.B. Fuller employees, members of the local government also joined the day of service. The event was kicked off with opening statements by Ismantono, H.B. Fuller’s Indonesia Country Manager, during which he emphasized H.B. Fuller's commitment to protecting the environment. Following his remarks, both the Village Head of Curah Dringu, Poniran, and the District Secretary, Rohmad, spoke.

Indonesia Employees VolunteeringParticipants worked diligently to clear the beach, which had been littered with garbage and debris. The group then took time to allow the sea water to recede as they prepared to plant mangroves. Mangrove forests grow in brackish water and are affected by tides. Generally, they grow on coastlines or in river estuaries. Like coral reefs, mangroves are very productive ecosystems that provide many benefits to the environment, including acting as habitat for thousands of species and protecting the coastline from erosion. Mangrove trees also produce fruit, which members of the local community make into juice and sell. The group worked tirelessly to plant the mangrove trees, which is a meticulous process of following a pattern, planting the tree deep enough, and binding it to wood. At the end of the day, the team, led by Roni Mustofa from our Environmental, Health and Safety group, presented information on HIV/AIDS prevention.

H.B. Fuller is proud to have participated alongside community members to improve the quality of the Tambak Bahak beach, understanding that their efforts will benefit the area – both ecologically and economically.
